Smallville Panel at Comic-Con
Posted by tarrow on Jul 30 2008, 11:57 AM | comments (3)

A bucket load of information on Season 8 was revealed at the Smallville Panel in the 2008 San Diego Comic-Con International this past week. Click on the red links to view the full reports.

TV Guide Report

Exec producer Brian Peterson says that the show will hold to its original "no tights" rule, but he would not comment on the "no flights" restriction.

Newsrama on Legion of Super-Heroes coming to Smallville

Geoff Johns, writer of next month's Final Crisis: Legion of 3 Worlds mini-series for DC Comics, will also be writing the Legion's introduction to the Smallville television show. As announced Sunday at San Diego Comic-Con, Johns will be writing "Legion," the ninth episode in this year's season 8 of Smallville.

"I've known the Smallville writing team – Todd [Slavkin], Darren [Swimmer], Brian [Wayne Peterson] and Kelly [Souders] – for a long time," Johns told Newsarama. "I had an idea for an episode, so we all had lunch. And I pitched them the idea of bringing the Legion of Super-Heroes to Smallville. And we're off and running."

In comics, the Legion of Super-Heroes is a group of super-powered teenagers from 1,000 years in the future who are inspired by the legend of Superman. The Legion story, which saw the young heroes time-traveling back to visit a young Clark Kent, recently inspired a Warner Bros. animated TV series.

Comics Continuum Audio Interviews

General Q&A Session

Highlights of Audio Interviews:

-Chloe will be back at the DP to visit, however her direction is changing. Her main focus will become Isis and running it. She will find that her passion is for helping the meteor affected of society, and will devote herself to that and become a mentor of sorts. She mentions taking in the Plastique character and other people will need her help. Chloe will be primarily busy with Jimmy, Davis and Isis.
-Chloe will attempt to "cut the apron strings with Clark". She will take a step back from Clark, and helping him, being his shadow.

-In regards to Clark, CF says Tess wants to know "Who he is and what goes on with him." Tess will know Clark was close to Lex, and she desperately wants to find Lex, and tries to get Clark to help her find Lex.
-SW was asked about his appearance later in the season, if they might add prosphetics, and he makes it sound like it's possible DB's physical appearance could be changed. He just reiterates that the character will come to resemble the Doomsday from the comics more.
-Davis Bloome (Doomsday) meets all the characters at once, and he and Clark will have a "unique, buddy-buddy friendship", but sounds vague and like there will be a lot of twists with it, basically saying he can't say much.
-The two villains so far aren't planned to work together.

-Tess will be a formidable opponent for everyone on the cast at some point.
-The new showrunners wanted to reinvigorate the show in all aspects - characters, relationships, dynamics, and bring more of the iconic into it.
-There will be one episode where they will address/touch on the "sexual tension" and love feelings between the Chlark relationship. However:
-The characters will mainly be moving on to the next phase of their lives. There will be a sense of leaving the past behind.
-When asked if this possibly being the last season, was there a drive to really push Clark forward, they mention up till now they haven't done a lot with Clark and pursuing a double identity, so Clark will be learning how to balance that. They mention Clark will be the same CK, but closer to Superman.
-They mention there's an option for Lois to do more than 13 episodes. Lois will be more front and center this season.
-Clark's secret identity will be the main thrust. Moving around the crowds in Metropolis will prove more difficult for Clark in comparison to what he has been used to be able to do more easily when being heroic in SV. He will also be accountable to Lois.

-They mention they wanted to mix things up more this year after the last few seasons. They want to honor the fans and love to hear what we say (though they follow what their own vision is). This year will have their own spin. They mention Clark and Lois together at the DP, and how AG/MM were always wanting to hold off on it, but they now want to "let the fun begin".
-"Clark, up till now, has basically denied that there's anything going on with a super hero, in SV or Metropolis. The question hasn't really been asked that much. This season there's going to come a point where Clark can't deny that there's someone out there saving people. That's a key change in the mythology of Clark Kent, that he actually is saying, "Yes, there's this other person." We're not going all the way with it. There will be this red and blue blur that will happen, that people are like, "What is that?". It's a big change for him to actually say "yes, that's not me, but there's something out there". That's the beginning of his double identity. The red and blue blur will be his street clothes. Jimmy Olsen does have a camera, and Lois is very curious. If they're working side by side, those worlds are going to collide."
-"Clark has always been reactive in the show, he's always been "Oh, something's happening". Clark's decision to go to the DP is his way of saying "I can't 'stick it out' (?) at the farm anymore, I've got to use my powers to help people." He's going out there. He's looking for them."

As for Lana Lang? A roundtable discussion with Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer reveals that:

One call-back to the show's earlier times comes with the return of Kristin Kreuk as Lana Lang for five episodes of the series, most likely airing during November sweeps. "We can't wait. It's going to come at a very bad time for Clark," Slavkin reveals. "She will look different. Visually, it will not be the Lana Lang that we're used to seeing. We're very excited," he says.

"Of course, she'll be just as beautiful as always," Darren Swimmer adds. [Reports say Kristin Kreuk has cut her hair to be very short].

"She's grown up," Todd reveals. "She's left Smallville and she's going to come back a woman. Obviously, she was a woman since she got married, but she's [still] a kid. She was living in the same town her whole life. This is her chance to come back with a stronger point of view than she ever has [had]," he says.

TV Guide Interview with Executive Producers
Posted by tarrow on Jul 25 2008, 01:26 AM | comments (4)

TV Guide has conducted a two part interview with some of the executive producers of Smallville.

TVGuide.com: Are you influenced by fan response on the Internet?
Swimmer: We definitely hear what the fans say and we can't help but be influenced by it, but I don't think that we're guided by it in the sense that we let it dictate anything, obviously. I don't think that fans would necessarily want that either. But we read it and we're in touch with what the fans are saying. They're our core fans. I think sometimes when somebody says they don't like something they still may find it entertaining, so we have to gauge how much of that is a response to the characters or a response to the way the story is being told.

TVGuide.com: What can you say about the statuses of Kristin Kreuk (Lana) and Michael Rosenbaum (Lex)? I have to say, Michael makes every actor he's in a scene with a better one.
Peterson: Michael is fantastic. His rendition of Lex Luthor helped make the show what it is today. Obviously, we were very sad to see him go. He's pursuing his own interests and we're hoping the door is definitely open for him to return. We've not seen the last of Lex Luthor.
Slavkin: Kristin will return for at least five episodes this season. [Lana] will appear at an inopportune time for Clark. We don't want to give away when it will happen, but it's going to be an awesome moment in the history of Smallville when Kristin Kreuk comes back.

Newsrama.com Interview with Executive Producer Darren Swimmer
Posted by tarrow on Jul 15 2008, 10:53 AM | comments (1)

Newsrama.com recently conducted an interview with Darren Swimmer, one of the four new executive producers stepping in to replace Al Gough and Miles Millar. Swimmer talks about the upcoming season as well as the impact of major departing figures (producers Al Gough & Miles Millar; actors Michael Rosenbaum & Kristin Kreuk)

Newsrama: Speaking of core actors doing less on the series this year, how difficult was it in the writer’s room to work out the amended presences of Kristin Kreuk (Lana) and Michael Rosenbaum (Lex) this year?

Swimmer: What helps is that neither character is actually dead in the universe of the show, even if they don’t appear every week. The effect that both of these characters has had on Clark is indelible. Luckily, both actors are so incredibly talented, they created personalities that will continue to resonate in the lives of the other characters. Aside from missing the actors and their work, it hasn’t been a problem in the writing room in terms of story and plot. Once we made the shift in our minds, we moved forward with the new characters and dynamics. We aren’t constantly saying to ourselves, “Damn, I wish we could use Lex in this scene.”

Season 8 Villains Cast
Posted by A.C on Jun 19 2008, 09:46 PM | comments (12)

The villains for the 8th and final season have been casted. According to Michael Ausiello's official site:

"My increasingly itchy moles report that Sam Witwer, best known to Battlestar Galactica fans as ex-Raptor ECO Alex “Crashdown” Quartararo, has been tapped to play the series regular role of Doomsday. Additionally, relative newcomer Cassidy Freeman is joining the cast as Tess, a sexy and vengeful firecracker with whom Lex hires to run his empire in his absence. Ironically, the actress’ most recent credit was the failed CW pilot Austin Golden Hour — starring none other than Green Arrow himself, Justin Hartley (who’s back on Smallville full time next season)."

Ask Ausiello: May 14 & 15, 2008
Posted by tarrow on May 16 2008, 01:25 PM | comments (1)

Good news at last! According to TV Guide's Ausiello, after weeks of negotiations, Allison Mack has signed a contract to return next season as series regular.

Smallville fans, consider this bullet officially dodged: Multiple sources confirm to me exclusively that after weeks of tense negotiations, Allison Mack has sealed a deal to return next season as a series regular! Although the specifics of the new contract -- which was signed just hours ago -- are being kept under wraps, I'm told it calls for Mack to appear in all episodes produced next season. As I reported earlier this week, the actress' reps were (wisely) using the imminent departure of Smallville vet Michael Rosenbaum as leverage in the negotiations. I'm going to go out on a limb and say the strategy paid off.

There is also a big possibility that Justin Hartley (aka. Green Arrow) will return to guest star in Season 8.

Justin Hartley's CW drama pilot, Austin Golden Hour, failed to receive a pick-up this week + The towering Adonis has a talent-holding deal with the CW, which means the network pretty much owns him for the foreseeable future + His Green Arrow was wildly popular on Smallville, and fans have been clamoring for the Justice Leaguer's return since the moment he left + In light of Michael Rosenbaum's impending Smallville exit — Lex bids adieu in tonight's season finale (8 pm/ET) — and Kristin Kreuk's decreased role next season, the show needs all the familiar faces it can get its hands on + Sources confirm to me exclusively that producers are very keen on bringing Hartley back into the fold ASAP = Duh. Justin Hartley is returning to Smallville next season as Green Arrow!

The CW Announces 2008-2009 Schedule
Posted by tarrow on May 14 2008, 10:29 AM | comments (5)

The CW has revealed their schedule for next fall in which Smallville will continue to run in its usual time slot on Thursdays at 8:00 pm ET. The official Smallville writeup reads:

Returning for its eighth season, this new interpretation of the enduring Superman mythology and its classic characters blends realism and adventure into an exciting action series. Last season, Clark Kent and Lex Luthor (Michael Rosenbaum) became the sworn enemies that comic book aficionados have always known and loved. The season also brought storylines of Krypton and the El family, including the arrival of Clark’s cousin Kara, a.k.a. Supergirl (Laura Vandervoort), and the return of Brainiac (James Marsters). There were also exciting guest stars from the Superman mythology, including Dean Cain (“Lois & Clark”) and Helen Slater (“Supergirl”). Clark discovered more about his home planet, who his parents were, what his future holds and why he was sent to Earth.

The series stars Tom Welling as Clark Kent, Kristin Kreuk as Lana Lang, Erica Durance as Lois Lane and Aaron Ashmore as Jimmy Olsen. Reinterpreting the Superman mythology from its roots, SMALLVILLE was developed for television by Alfred Gough & Miles Millar (“Shanghai Noon,” “Spiderman 2”), based on the DC Comics characters. The executive producers are Kelly Souders & Brian Peterson, Todd Slavkin & Darren Swimmer, James Marshall, Mike Tollin, Brian Robbins and Joe Davola. The series is produced by Tollin/Robbins Productions and Warner Bros. Television. Superman was created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Schuster.

Missing from the cast list are Allison Mack (Chloe) and Laura Vandervoort (Kara). It appears as though Kristin Kreuk will actually remain a series regular, contrary to previous notices.

And when did Smallville start to be so bloody and violent? Is it necessary to show so much gore? Did we have to see both Tom and Michael’s chest carved into from belly to chin? And the gun fights? Always shooting people here and there. Just not necessary

Ask Ausiello: May 8, 2008
Posted by tarrow on May 9 2008, 08:01 AM | comments (2)

Could Lex, Lionel, Lana, AND Chloe be gone next season? Michael Ausiello reveals that negotiations have hit a snag with Allison Mack:

Just a week after it was announced that Michael Rosenbaum would not be returning full time as Lex next season, sources confirm to me exclusively that Allison Mack, arguably Smallville's most popular heroine, may be the next to go. This marks quite a turnaround from a few months ago, when I deemed Mack a lock to come back next season. And I wasn't the only one. Although a deal wasn't signed at the time, Smallville insiders tell me that all indications were that the actress was on board for Season 8.

But then Rosenbaum tendered his resignation and everything fell apart.

"Allison's camp used Michael leaving as leverage in the negotiations with [Warner Bros.]," says one Smallville source, who adds that Kristin Kreuk's decision to only return for a handful of episodes as Lana only strengthened Mack's bargaining position. "They need Chloe now more than ever — and Allison's people know it." (Mack's reps declined to comment for this story.)

With budget cuts and already decreasing ratings, can Smallville afford to lose Mack too?
